Board Meeting 2009-2010

Minutes from May 5, 2010

  1. Membership—
    West Chicago HS is leaving the league. Proviso Math and Science Academy will now take their place in the Cook Division. Leyden, Huntley and South Elgin high schools are on the waiting list.
  2. Schedule—
    The board unanimously approved the schedule as written below.
    • Meet 1 – Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010
    • Meet 2 – Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010
    • Meet 3 – Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010
    • Meet 4 – Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011
    • Meet 5 – Wednesday, March 9, 2011
  3. Written topics—
    The board discussed the topics as presented, made some modifications, and unanimously approved them as they now stand.
  4. Oral topics—
    The board discussed the topics as presented, made some modifications, and unanimously approved them as they now stand.
  5. Treasury Report—
    The need for a CPA to look at the league’s expenses was discussed. There is some question about whether we need to report to the IRS the money being paid to question writers. Kevin Wiland will look into this.
  6. Hosting instructions—
    It was agreed to leave them as they are with minor modifications for the number of alternates. (Five instead of three.)
  7. Scripts—
    The list of specific calculators will be removed. Clarification of rules regarding calculators was discussed.
  8. Rules—
    Students competing at two levels was discussed. It was agreed that since the philosophy of the league is to maximize opportunities for students to participate, then no student should ever be a contestant for two events if it means leaving someone else at home.
  9. Old business—
    This is the last year that statistics will be printed. In the future, the league’s statistics will be posted on the NSML web site. Positive feedback was also given for the way the bus situation was handled at the conference meet. ETHS will attempt to do the same in future years.
